I thought that was something I had in Ecuador, but the shiny tile floors,
television and modern bathroom of a hotel room could not provide that to the extent a small, wooden hut with a thatched roof could. I don't miss the roosters -- which crowed at all hours of the night (yes, the movies are lying to you about roosters crowing at sunrise) -- the bug bites, or the hot sun.I do, however, miss the simplicity of life and the sense of purpose I felt while we were there. It was really nice to walk home after a hard day of work to the smiling faces of our host family. I miss the sudden Mayan
conversations during dinner that I did not understand a word of. And, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I even miss cramming 17 people into that van built for fewer and driving somewhere completely new. I could ramble on and on about my trip, but if you are really interested in reading my ramblings, check out my commentary written for the Technician.
